In 2013 my grandfather, Papa Julio was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
That same year I flew overseas to visit my family and spent some time talking with and listening to him. Just spending time with him and listening to him share moments e.g. how he lost his dad at a young age and the challenges he faced in his early years was extremely inspiring. His life's work was dedicated to shoe making/repairing and he was well known and respected for it in his community.
He was and still is a great man who has always taken pride in his family and what he’s achieved. Unfortunately for him and our family, Alzheimer's is slowly taking him away from us. I remember listening to him re-tell me things we had just discussed 2 minutes prior, simply because he’s losing his short term memory. I wouldn’t interrupt him and just listened, it was by far the best time I spent with him as he continued to smile and tell me various life stories. What really gets me is that I have read about the hardship that he will endure as a victim of this disease.
Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to create the Mind2Trek project to raise $2,000,000 by September 2015 for Alzheimer's Australia Dementia Research Foundation - Victoria. My intentions are to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research so that a cure can be found and other people will not have to experience their grandparents/parents/loved ones to be taken away from them by Alzheimer's disease.
The figures for people diagnosed with Alzheimer's are growing year on year (worldwide – in 2014 approx. 44 million Alzheimer’s & Dementia), therefore, I kindly request that you donate generously here.
